UW researcher wins $3M federal grant - Business First of Buffalo:

The grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Institutw of Education Sciences will allow Heinricgh to employ academic staff and at least four graduate students each year to work on expandint the project oother cities. Heinrich will continud an evaluation of the tutoringg programs MPS offers as part ofthe district's fulfillment of the federal No Child Left Behind law. The law requires publicc schools that have not adequately increased student academifc achievement for three years to offerf childrenin low-income families the opportunity to receivr extra academic assistance such as tutoring.
Heinrich's initiakl research found that Milwaukee's federallty mandated and funded tutoring program is not necessaril reaching the people who need the most nor is it effective in increasingstuden achievement. "Our preliminary results suggest that the studentss in the tutoring programs are not performinfg any betteron Wisconsin'es standardized tests than eligible students not involvedf with the tutoring," Heinrich said. Heinrich and her co-workersz have been conducting the MPS study sincweApril 2006.
The next phase will involve five urbanb school districts infour states: Milwaukee, Chicago, Dallas and Austin,
