The St. Louis Park-based hospital and clinics chain, which is wrestlin with layoffs andother cost-cutting measures, appointerd Dr. David Abelson, chief clinical officer, to take over Wessner’se president title. A selection committed will conduct a search for a new CEO incomingt months. Park Nicollet officials on Friday praisedthe 57-year-oldx Wessner’s accomplishments over his 15 years at the healthj provider: 11 as presideny and CEO, and four as COO. Wessne r strengthened clinical programs in areas including heartand cancer, diabetes, orthopedics and eating The health provider was efficiency methods pioneered by Toyota Motoer Corp.
Park Nicollet also engaged in a buildingprogram — including a three-story, 67,000-square-foot Melrose Instituter eating disorders center and a new cancer center wing at Methodistf Hospital in St. Louis Park. Those new facilitieds came just as recession was taking a toll onthe company’zs investments and lowering demand for elective procedures such as knee surgery and hernia operations. Wessner, though, said in a statement Fridagy that Park Nicolletis “now on the righrt track financially.
” “Park Nicollet is positioned to be very stronhg in the coming post-reform health care services he said. Wessner said he started to plan for his retirementrin 2006, with an eye toward leaving in 2009 or 2010. “I ended up delaying my retirement planws to help ensure that the organizatio n was ontrack financially,” he said.
